If you're planning on staying in London for at least six months or more, then it's well worth looking at longer-term accommodation as you can often save a great deal of money.

The websites we suggest here are all good sources of flat-shares. But before you start looking, make sure you follow our golden rules:

  • Never pay an accommodation agency to find you somewhere to live – the websites listed here all offer a free service.
  • Check how large a deposit you will need to pay – it's usually equivalent to one month's rent and you'll get it back at the end of your stay.
  • Never pay a deposit BEFORE you see a room. You may find that the room doesn't actually exist – particularly if it is offered at a very low rent. Never send money using Western Union – this is always a warning sign.
  • Check how much rent you will need to pay in advance – most places will ask you to pay one month in advance.
  • Check whether or not the bills are included in the rent – these could easily add on an extra £50 a month.
  • Find out all the rules of the house – such as smoking, parties and entertaining friends – BEFORE you move in!
