Mike’s Class: A general review
I read a few days ago that the secret of a good school is good teachers. So, having Mike Mooney as our teacher absolutely vindicates this assertion in the case of the English Studio. And this is not just my view that I’m putting forward. Ask the rest of students who have or have had the opportunity to be in his class and you’ll get a clear unanimity. Not only does he have the knowledge but he also has that extra trait that makes him dear to us all. His charisma and sometimes his disarming frankness all combine do the trick.
I know people who are eager to get in his class, but who first have to wait for others to leave it. It’s the flipside of a policy tending to restrict the number of students in a classroom, which I consider a plus in this school. Nothing is left to chance. There is an acceptable balance among the different modules of the Cambridge tests. Nevertheless, with Mike there’s plenty of time to go off a bit and make room for spontaneous conversations. Particularly, on Mondays when we speak in past and Fridays when we use future tenses.
Lot of unexpected jokes and funny performances are common. And if tensions ever arise, he always has a brood of imaginary puppies at hand to bring the laughter back. However, his class is a matter of hard work as well. The use of synonyms is a challenging exercise this Irish man put us through several times. Texts are always broken into manageable “chunks” to learn. Then, to organise practical pieces of advice for our own writings he gives us the Magic Egg!
Being his student is simply wonderful. My apologies if there are some aspects of Mr. Mooney’s class you don’t understand by reading this. As they say in Vegas: You have to be there to win!
