Things are changing

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Hey guys,
As you know the new term starts next. You will receive your new class details from your teacher on Friday. If you have not taken the level test, you will need to take the test in reception. If not, you will stay in the same level as this term.

Also, due to a problem with the database it may be that your name will not appear on the register on Tuesday. You will have to go to reception to make sure your name appears.

Thanks and I hope you have a nice long weekend.
Stuart

18+ STUDENT OYSTER PHOTO CARD APPLICATIONS

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Hi all

Due to the new Academic Year (2009-2010) for Transport for London, all new applications for Oysters will be processed from the 1st September 2009.

All of you, who want to apply for this discount, have to come to reception with the £5 Postal order and the photograph, and fill in the new application form. Please remember that all new applications will be sent from the 1st of September otherwise TFL will reject your application and you will not be refunded.

For those who rather apply online, you will have to wait until the above date when TFL will be re-activating the online system.

Unfortunately this is something that doesn’t depend on the school, so if you don’t have your Oyster card already, you will have to pay the full fare of transport for the whole of August and the first weeks of September until you get your card.

If you want to get it soon after the 1st September, please apply online, this will save you lots of time and money. To apply online you can check The English Studio Student Handbook, which has the specific instructions.

Thanks!

Anamaria

WHO SAID FEAR?

Can you imagine speaking in English with people from a huge variety of countries and understanding their accents without any problems? You might think that´s imposible but actually it´s not!

When I first came to England I couldn´t say a word because it was so daunting to me and I thought people would think that I was  a fool.

Then I decided to take the bull by the horns and I devised a programme to improve my speaking. It included watching T.V in English, listening to the news on the radio, trying to meet English speakers everyday to have a chat with them, evesdropping when I was in the tube and taking classes at The English-Studio.

Now I feel confident and I´m not shy. I can keep a fluid conversation with people from other countries and as a result, I’m enjoying my time over here more than ever. So if you really want to develop your communication skills, go for it!

A World Language

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Whan I started teaching English many many years ago, the most popular exams for students to do were the FCE, CAE and CPE. While they remain hugely popular, I have noticed a surge in the number of people doing the IELTS in the last few years as it is seems to be the  standard criterion by which British universities grant admission to foreign students.

I my self sometimes work as an invigilator for the IELTS exam and it really gives me a sense of how much of a world language English is. in the room where I was working last Saturday, for example, there were twentyfour people: ALL of them from different countries. i feel so lucky to be a native English speaker sometimes!

It’s always nice to then get the train uinto Charing Crosss, see  The London Eye, Big Ben and Parliament and then meet up with some mates for a cheap and cheerful lunch in Chinatown: home of the Next World Language!

A heads up

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Hey guys,

Just to let all you Shepherds Bushians know that from next week you will be sent to reception to get your sexy new English Studio ID card. You only get one shot at the photo so get your hair done, have that makeover you’ve been putting off and get the best picture taken. Try not to look like one of these guys.

Onward and Upward

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Well, it has been a very busy summer at London’s coolest language school and we are proud to be helping so many of you improve your English. Over the next few weeks, I will be seeing  a lot more of you around our centres in Catton Street and Holborn.

This week our Rob is taking a short and very well-earned break, so if you have any problems you wish to discuss, I’ll be happy to see what I can do for you!

THE ENGLISH STUDIO HOLIDAYS

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Hi Guys

I just want to remind you about the new holiday rules.

The school will only be on holidays for Christmas. Next one from 16th December 2009 to 6th January 2010

This means that you will have the opportunity to make the most of your English course without stops except for bank holidays.

However you have the choice to take holidays whenever you decide to, and the allowance depends on the length of your course. Please check the boards for more information and don’t forget to book them one week advance at the E-Reception.

If you feel a little bit disappointed because of this, let me also remind you that next bank holiday will be on the 31st August so prepare yourself for a long weekend after the end of this term.
