A good way to improve your English

Friday, October 30th, 2009

As a student in London, it is quite easy to find someone from your country, and then the temptation: which language will I speak: English or my mother tongue? I think, if you really are interested in improve your English, don’t give up: keep speaking English! Yes, I know, some times you can fell uncomfortable, but it is normal. Remember: the more you speak, more quickly you will become fluent. Even in the reception, with your friends, during the break: keep trying! Believe me: you will see the good results before you can imagine.
Best Regards,
Miguel.

Halloween-card-mirror-1904

Halloween has origins in the ancient festival known as Samhain, which is derived from Old Irish and means roughly “summer’s end”. This was a Gaelic festival celebrated mainly in Ireland and Scotland.
The festival of Samhain celebrates the end of the “lighter half” of the year and beginning of the “darker half”, and is sometimes regarded as the “Celtic New Year”.

The celebration has some elements of a festival of the dead. The ancient Celts believed that the border between this world and the Otherworld became thin on Samhain, allowing spirits (both harmless and harmful) to pass through. The family’s ancestors were honored and invited home whilst harmful spirits were warded off. It is believed that the need to ward off harmful spirits led to the wearing of costumes and masks. Their purpose was to disguise oneself as a harmful spirit and thus avoid harm. In Scotland the spirits were impersonated by young men dressed in white with masked, veiled or blackened faces. Samhain was also a time to take stock of food supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. Bonfires played a large part in the festivities. All other fires were doused and each home lit their hearth from the bonfire. The bones of slaughtered livestock were cast into its flames. Sometimes two bonfires would be built side-by-side, and people and their livestock would walk between them as a cleansing ritual.

The name ‘Halloween’ and many of its present-day traditions derive from the Old English era.

Happy Halloween everyone

Agents

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Dear agents,

First of all, thank you very much for representing our school worldwide and sending students to study with us at the most amazing city I have ever been to.

As we all know, regulations in order to get a visa change quite often and both school and agents must be updated about them. A single change can have strong effects on our student’s applications. From now on, every Thursday, there will be a new post in our blog specially addressed to you in order to help all of us at this tough process.

Since April, students are being asked to provide certificates in order to prove their current level of English. Unfortunately, some of them were not able to present the mandatory document with all the requirements. The English Studio has always been eager to help them by authorizing our agents to apply level tests and arrange phone interviews with our directors of study.

From now on, only the agents who are registered to Education UK are able to apply our tests. We have been browsing their websites abroad in search of the accurate lists.

You can always contact me by email to discuss this issue.

Visa Guide and Visa Letters

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Hi all,

I have had many students coming to ask me to send them the visa guide that we have in reception. In the past it was not possible because the file was too big. I have managed to make it smaller and I now have it posted on the internet.

Visa Guide

Another thing you to need to be aware of is that from Monday 2nd November, we will not print any visa letters for students extending their visa. You must apply using a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). This is a special number created by myself or the Admin Manager. A CAS costs £10, which is what the Home Office charges us.

If you have any questions, check the guide and then email me (my email is in the guide ;) )

Remember remember the 5th November

Monday, October 26th, 2009

On the 5th November 1605.  A group of people, including Guy Fawkes,  who didn’t like the government of that time decided to blow up the Houses of Parliament. They were caught, imprisoned and tortured.

We celebrate their failure with a spectular display of pretty, magical colours and explosions in the sky. Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night, is on its way. Find out where you can go to an event in your area.

Remember to wrap up warm as it’s getting freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezing.

Take care

The Yuletide Cometh

Monday, October 26th, 2009

ChristmessI’ve been thinking a lot  lately about Christmas..I know it seems like a long way away at the moment, but you’d be surprised how quickly it will creep up on you! Christmas is in nine weeks and November is the time you really should start thinking about booking your ticket home. If you leave it too late, you might find yourself stuck in London for the holidays.

Don’t get me wrong: there are very few cities in the world as Christmasy as London, but for many of us,  Christmas is about family and spending time with old friends.

In order to help you better prepare, the school will be CLOSED from the Wednesday 16th December until  Wednesday January 6th.
