Student Oyster Card Delays

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Hi everybody,
As many of you might know, for the last few weeks there has been a Royal Mail strike going on and in consequence lots of Student Oyster Card deliveries are delayed and maybe some of you have not received your cards on time. Most of the requests are approved by The English Studio within one working day from the application date. If your card has not arrived to your address you can text your Application Reference number to 07624809356 to check the status of your application. We hope Royal Mail industrial actions end soon and you can start or continue enjoying the transport discount.

It is just my third day here, but it has been amazing! Working at reception, helping students, introducing the school to new students, having contact with people from all around the world… It couldn’t be different as we are in London. Thank you for the oportunity! I’m here to contribute to the school’s success! Best Regards, Miguel

Please allow me to introduce myself

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Hello everybody

Just a quick word to introduce myself. I’m Mike and Iwill now be working as the director of studies at The English Studio. This means that if there is a problem to do with your classes or course I might be able to help you. You can find me in the front office in Holborn most days and occasionally in Shepherd’s Bush.

I hope that I will eventually  be able to be as good a DOS as my predecessor, Rob King, who has moved on to even bigger and better things and whom I shall sorely miss.

Something to Aim For

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

rouxI’ll admit it, I’m a couch potato. There’s nothing I like more than kicking back on the sofa after my son has been put to bed and enjoying some mind-numbing tv. It helps me to unwind and it’s cheaper than the pub. A perfect evening for me is when dinner coincides with my current tv favourite: Masterchef.

I love this programme so much because it’s a reality show without rudeness and where the contestants don’t want to be something as vacuous as a popstar or do something as narcissistic as revive their flagging celebrity. I also just adore watching lovely food being prepared and presented.

However, the reason why I think all English Studio students should watch it is to observe and listen to the amazing Michel Roux Jr. French by birth and upbringing, this guy has really mastered the English language, phrasing himself succinctly, clearly and with great linguistic dexterity. Compare him to Philippe Starck, who, though charming, speaks in an almost comedy French accent -and you’ll see what I mean.

Along with  the foreign ambassadors I sometimes see sparring with the mighty Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight, Roux is among the finest foreign speakers of the English language I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. Watch him any weeknight on BBC2 and see what you should be aiming for…

Apparently, he’s a pretty good cook too….

Fame (not the awful new film)

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Hey guys,

Here is something that one of my students, who would prefer to remain nameless, but I think their work deserves to be read!! So here it is:

“Everybody has already dreamed about being famous, even if it happened in his/her childhood. Maybe it is because of the glamour, maybe because of the money – I don’t know. But one thing is certain: once you are famous, other aspects of it can make fame become more annoying than desirable.

We are used to seeing TV programmes that show beautiful people, who are always on the news too. Therefore, the media can make us think that it feels good to be known and admired by everybody. Besides, usually those who are in show business, who are best seller writers or a president (and this list could be endless) earn a lot of money. In this materialistic world, most people think you don’t need anything else to achieve happiness and comfort in life.

On the other hand, the issue is deeper than it seems to be; being famous may be much worse than we can see. It would be complete chaos every time you went to a public place: everybody would be trying to get closer to you and you would be constantly asked to take a picture with people you had never seen before. However, I believe the worst thing would be having every detail of your life in the news. Privacy is very important in our life, and without this you will never be able to be yourself: you will always be acting and worried about the public around you.

Although fame can bring us money and recognition, it brings fans and paparazzi. The lack of privacy that it involves is something that nobody would like to live with, including me. Everybody likes to do whatever they want with whoever they want, without being watched. Consequently, fame is not desirable in real life, only in our dreams.”

Have a good weekend!!

Exams

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Hello Everybody!

Just a quick word to let you know that this Friday will be a very important day, so make sure you come to class. Your teachers will be speaking to you individually about exams. obviously, some of you might not be interested in doing exams, but we believe it’s very important for you to have a target to shoot for- and even if you don’t fancy doing an exam in December, you might want to do one in March.

Remember, having a cambridge exam qualification is very useful for your career and having shown an interest in doing an exam will be helpful if you decide to extend your visa. on friday, your teacher will sit down with you and explain what the options are and you can make a decision after that.

So please, let’s have full attendance on Friday!

Mike
