Experiencing London, without spending a fortune.

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

As students we are always looking for ways to save a little bit of money here and there, and the good news is that in London, you don’t have to spend a fortune to have a good time. Most capital cities carry the tag of being expensive but with a little bit of research it’s not hard to find the best and cheapest places to go. Whether it’s a meal with friends, spending time around the museums of the city or going out to sample the local night life, there’s something for everyone.

Free Events

With London having so much on offer, there are plenty of free events happening; it’s just a matter of knowing where to look.

Free events are going on in London throughout the year, from film premieres, to music events, markets and much more. Without spending a penny, you can experience so much in and around the city.

Museums

Most museums in London are free entry. The only time you have to pay is to see some of the exhibitions which are going on. There are museums to suit all interests. From science museums, to art galleries offering collections of world art and artefacts, there is plenty to see.

London Attractions

If you really want to visit some of the best known London attractions then the London Pass offers discount on around 55 attractions. You can choose from a 1, 2, 3 or 6 day pass. Buying the pass gives you free entry into some of the most famous tourist spots in London. As well as this, the pass can be used to get discount in shops, restaurants and cinemas.

Show and Dinner Deals

With these deals you get to be wined and dined before going to see a show in a London theatre. The prices vary depending on the show you want to go and see. Generally the prices range from £20 to £50, so it can be a great way to get to see a show in the West End- with dinner thrown in.

If the show and dinner deal is not your thing, then tickets for the West End can be bought separately. The cheapest way of getting tickets for a show is to attend preview showings or to visit the tkts booths, which offer tickets at discounted prices.

Eating Out

Pub food, or pub grub as it is more locally known, is often where you will find the cheapest offers and deals on food. Many pubs within London offer various dishes, such as the traditional Sunday Roast.

Generally, a take-away tends to be cheaper than eating out in restaurants, with fish and chips, being an old British favourite.

Going Out

The club scene in London can be expensive. Depending on what area you go to, you can expect to have to pay quite a bit of money. Although a night out like this can be nice once in a while, cheap nights out can also be found. Some clubs offering student nights can be worth checking out. These are often nights through the week when there is a reduced, or even free, door charge and certain drinks on promotion. Some clubs may require that you bring a student ID in order to make the most of these offers.

Happy Hour

The best offers on drinks are often during happy hour. Many pubs and bars in London have these offers going on, so there are plenty of places to visit. More often than not, bars will have beer and cocktails on offer at this time.

Cheap Cinema

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Everyone loves a good story. And cinema has shown us the most beautiful stories ever told. It doesn’t take long until you can finally watch that book you read on a big screen. But if buy the ticket to watch every single movie that calls your attention it will cost you a fortune. We’re in London! There are amazing movies opening every week! Well, if you know where and when to go it will save you some precious pounds.

On Mondays, Tickets at the Institute of Contemporary Art’s cinema are just £5! And the place is amazing! Not only will you enjoy a good art movie but you can also enjoy a special discount on the cafe if you present your cinema ticket. Do not expect to watch blockbusters there. They just show art movies from all parts of the world.

You can go to BFI on Tuesdays and pay the same for a ticket. But they sell out quite fast. You can book it online or try to arrive there the sooner the better. Southbank is my favorite area in London. You can always enjoy a nice walk while you wait for the movie to start.

Orange advertises their special discount on Wednesdays absolutely everywhere. We all know that you can get 2 tickets for the price of one.

If you want something even cheaper, you should visit Prince Charles Cinema at Leicester Square. When you pay for an annual membership (that just costs you £10) you can purchase tickets for unbeliavable £1.50 on weekdays. The main disadvantage is that they don’t show brand new movies there. Sundays are famous for their Sing-a-longs.

Don’t forget we also have our DVD library in Holborn. You can rent a movie there without any cost. Well, you pay a deposit just to register but you get it back when your course finishes.

Buy the popcorn and enjoy the show!
