Mother Language: Embracing Multilingualism at Our London English School
You may have been too busy on 21 February speaking your mother tongue, and missed the fact that – annually – the world comes together to celebrate International Mother Language Day, a day dedicated to promoting linguistic (and cultural) diversity. At The English Studio, we believe that language is more than just a tool for communication; it’s a bridge that connects cultures, preserves heritage, and empowers individuals. As an English school in the heart of London, we are proud to support our students in balancing their native languages with learning English. Join us as we explore the significance of the special day that is Mother Language Day, and how multilingualism enriches our lives.
At The English Studio in London, we’re privileged to be part of one of the world’s most linguistically diverse cities. Did you know that over 300 languages are spoken in London? This rich linguistic landscape makes our city a living celebration of mother languages (or mother tongues) every day.
Over the years, students have come to The English Studio from more than 50 countries, but we cannot know just from this fact how many mother languages they speak. Many countries share a language, but many people’s mother tongue does not correspond with the official language of the country from which they come.
Watch as four of our students from The English Studio compare words from their official languages of their country—see the similarities and differences!
The History and Significance of International Mother Language Day
International Mother Language Day was established by UNESCO in 1999 to honour the Bengali language movement in Bangladesh, where students had fought for the recognition of their mother language. Today, this day serves as a global reminder of the importance of preserving linguistic diversity. With over 7,000 languages spoken worldwide, each language carries unique cultural traditions, stories, and knowledge. However, nearly 40% of these languages are endangered, making it crucial to celebrate and protect them.
At The English Studio, we recognise the value of every student’s mother language. Whether you speak Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, or any other language, we encourage you to take pride in your linguistic roots at the same time as mastering English.
Why Mother Languages Matter
Your mother language is more than just a way to communicate; it’s a key part of your cultural identity and heritage. Research shows that being multilingual enhances cognitive abilities, improves problem-solving skills, and even boosts creativity. For many of our students, their native language is a connection to their family, history, and traditions.
Learning English doesn’t mean leaving your mother language behind. In fact, balancing both languages can open doors to new opportunities, from global careers to cross-cultural friendships. At our London English language school, we celebrate the unique linguistic backgrounds of our students and help them thrive in a multilingual world.
How Your Mother Language Helps You Learn English
Some people worry that speaking their native language might slow down their English learning progress, but the opposite is true! Here’s how bilingualism supports English fluency:
Stronger Language Foundation – Understanding grammar and sentence structure in your native language makes it easier to learn similar rules in English.
Expanded Vocabulary – Many English words come from other languages! For example, “chocolate” comes from Spanish, and “pyjamas” from Hindi.
Easier Pronunciation – Practising English sounds alongside your native language can help to improve accent and clarity.
Learning from difference – Language learning can come about as much because of difference as it can from similarity; Read our article about gendered and ungendered language
Better Retention – Studies show that students who use their first language for reference retain new English words better.
At The English Studio, we encourage students to embrace their bilingual or multilingual backgrounds as an advantage in their learning journey.
Balancing English Learning with Your Mother Language
If you’re learning English as a second language, it’s natural to wonder how to balance it with your native tongue. Here are some practical tips:
- Practise Both Daily: Dedicate time to speaking, reading, and writing in both languages.
- Join Language Exchange Programmes: Connect with others who are learning your native language while you practise English.
- Celebrate Cultural Events: Participate in festivals or events that honour your culture and language.
At The English Studio, we provide a supportive environment where students can embrace their multilingual identities while achieving their English language goals.
How We Celebrate Language Diversity
As a leading English language school in London, we are committed to fostering an inclusive community that values every student’s unique background. Here’s how we celebrate linguistic diversity:
