London is one of the most exciting and culturally rich cities on the planet, making it a top destination for learning English. But before you pack your bags, it’s important to know what kind of UK visa or travel authorisation you’ll need based on your nationality, course duration, and travel history.
Short-term UK Study Visa
If you’re planning to study English in the UK for a period longer than 6 months but less than 11 months, a short UK study visa is the ideal option. This visa allows international students to enrol in English language courses without the need for long-term sponsorship. At our accredited London language school, we support students through every step of the application process, including providing the official documents needed for your short UK study visa. It’s a great way to experience British culture, improve your English skills, and enjoy everything London has to offer.
This guide outlines everything you need to know about UK student visas, ETAs, and short-term study rules, so you can focus on preparing for your English course and enjoying life in London.
Do You Need a Visa to Study English in the UK?
Your visa requirement depends on:
- Your nationality
- The length of your English course
- Your current immigration status
You may need one of the following:
- An official confirmation letter from our London English school
- A Standard Visitor Visa or Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
- A Short-term Study Visa
⚠️ Important: Visa rules change frequently. Always check with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for the latest updates.
Visa vs ETA: What’s the Difference?
Most students fall into one of two groups:
- ETA-eligible countries: You likely won’t need a visa. Just apply for an ETA.
- Visa-required countries: You’ll need to apply for a Standard Visitor or Short-term Study Visa.
ETA-Eligible Countries Include: USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, EU & EEA countries, Switzerland and other countries. Check if you need a visa or ETA

An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is not a visa; it’s a pre-clearance to travel to the UK.
- Valid for 2 years or until your passport expires
- Multiple entries allowed (up to 6 months per visit)
- Apply online or via the UK ETA app
- Cost: £16 (Check the latest cost here)
